Microsoft's Xbox 360 vs the Sony's Playstation 3

microsoft has tried to catch up with some of the titans of the gaming world, such as Sony with the release of the Xbox 360. The Xbox 360 offers many new features that players will love:

  • Free limited subscription to online gaming This allows players who have not been participating in online gaming a chance to see what is available at no charge.
  • All Xbox 360s come with live-aware This means you can get a friend invite or see who is online and what they are playing from your Xbox 360. The button in the middle of the controller makes all this very easy.
  • It offers great media features including listening to music while you play games, the ability to create custom playlists and your own custom soundtracks, the ability to rip songs from original CDs to your Xbox 360 and stream music from your MP3 player to your Xbox 360. You can also create slideshows of photos to share with friends and family.
  • Xbox 360 has a wireless controller. No more tripping over the wires, although it can support two wired controllers through usb ports in the front.
  • The game console is not only great for gamers, but developers as well. It is a powerful machine with an unprecedented amount of RAM a feature added on the request of developers.
But, Xbox 360 still has some problems that need to be worked out:
  • Their Japanese third party support is lacking While some Japanese developers offer software for the Xbox, it is small in number when compared to what the same developers offer for Playstation.
  • While the controller is wireless, it eats batteries rather quickly. Standard alkaline batteries only last about thirty hours, so if you buy Xbox 360, invest in rechargeable batteries to save yourself some money in the end.
  • When they were set up in WalMart stores before days before the launch, many suffered what is known as the Xbox 360 screen of death, an error screen. The Xbox 360 had also had some problems with overheating.
  • Some report the Xbox 360 system as being very noisy when playing an Xbox 360 disc.
Many people are eagerly awaiting the release of Playstation 3, which may occur as soon as November of this year. It has been said that the Playstation 3 has an outward feel (which allows it to stand vertically or horizontally on its own), as opposed to the Xbox 360s inward feel. It is a much larger console than the Playstation 2 and closer to the original size of the Xbox. Game discs slide into the console like CDs slide into a car player. Here are a few attractive features of the Playstation 3:
  • It is always on, so you can access your Playstation 3 from anywhere as long as you have an Internet connection.
  • With a Playstation portable, you can connect to your Playstation 3 and transfer media such as music and movies.
  • The Playstation 3 appears to be much more powerful than that Xbox 360, Ninetindo Revolution, and Playstation 2. Initial reports say it will be twice as fast as the Xbox 360.
  • Developers and publishers of over 230 games have announced titles for Playstation 3 games.
Here are a few reported cons and problems with the Playstation 360:

  • Comes with only 256 MB, less than the 512 MB the Xbox 360 will come with.
  • Their Playstation network Platform (the online service) is still in development and may not be ready by the time Playstation 3 is released.
  • The launch of the Playstation 3 has already been delayed due to disk problems.
Both the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 are incredible gaming consoles. It seems that although the Xbox 360 came out first, the best bet is still the Playstation 3. The strongest point of the Xbox 360 is its online functionality, but Sony may be working on something similar to Xbox Live right now. However, microsoft is closing the gap with Xbox 360 and probably will eventually catch up with Sony in gaming consoles. For some users, it may come down to something as simple as which one is more compatible with the games they already own.

Choosing the Best Times to Travel to Europe

A good compromise is to choose the period before and after the busy summer season, because the weather is mostly good and prices are lower. Southern Europe also offers a nice experience in the winter, with reasonably mild weather.

If nice weather is important to you, the winter is one of the worst times to see northern Europe. Gray, wet and cold weather is common December through February. And daylight is in short supply, so evenings will be spent primarily indoors.

However, winter travel offers the best prices. Italy or Greece would be good choices if you are limited to a winter vacation.

There are some other benefits to winter travel. Winter festivals and New Year's are exciting times in Europe. Cities such as Paris are beautiful when decorated for the christmas holidays. New Year's eve in Paris is exciting, with parties, festivals and night life. Several other countries have holiday events and festivals as well.

The biggest benefit of winter travel is that you will see fewer other tourists. Your experience will be more authentic, seeing European life without the crush of people.

Early spring finds most of Europe still chilly and wet, especially in the north, so streets are uncrowded. Though not great for swimming, the weather is fine for outdoor tours and sightseeing. Budget-minded travelers will like the cheaper prices for airfare and hotels.

May and June are among the best months to visit most European countries. The weather is warm on most of the continent and it's still uncrowded. There are a variety of festivals and cultural events throughout Europe in May and June. Because the tourist season hasn't started into full swing yet, you can get good deals on accommodations and plane fare. An added benefit is few lines at most tourist attractions and plenty of room on tours and in restaurants.

Once schools let out, Europe quickly becomes crowded. The summer months are very busy and hotels get booked quickly. Because of the demand, everything is more expensive in the summer. Tourist destinations are very crowded and you will wait in lines at many attractions.

Northern Europe, with its good weather and smaller crowds, would be a good option for summer travel. Whatever season you choose, there are more than enough attractions to provide a great European holiday.

Why You Should Choose Satellite Radio from Sirius and XM

A satellite radio is a special radio that receives signals broadcast by satellite. This allows the listener to follow a single channel no matter where they are because the signal's reach is not limited by station power and curvature of the Earth. Satellite radio, also called digital radio, offers commercial and distortion free, CD quality music beamed to your car radio or home stereo from space.

We all have our favorite radio stations that we preset into our car radios or home stereos, flipping between stations as we drive to and from work, on errands and around town. But when you travel too far away from the source station, the signal breaks up and fades into static. Most radio signals can only travel about 30 or 40 miles from their source. On long trips passing through different cities, you might have to change radio stations every hour or so as the signals fade in and out. Obviously, it's not much fun scanning through static trying to find something to listen to.

Imagine a radio station that can broadcast its signal from more than 22,000 miles away, and then come through on your car radio or home stereo with complete clarity. You could drive from anchorage, Alaska to miami, florida, without ever having to change the radio station! Not only would you ever hear static interfering with your favorite tunes, but the music would be interrupted by no commercials. Welcome to the world of satellite radio....commercial and distortion free listening from coast to coast!

Car manufacturers have installed satellite radio receivers in some of the latest model automobiles, and electronics companies have launched several models of portable satellite radio receivers. Satellite radio is also available for the home for commercial and distortion free listening enjoyment!

What are the two types of satellite radio?

In the united States, there are XM and Sirius.

XM is a service in the united States that provides digital programming directly from two satellites (nicknamed "Rock" and "Roll") in geostationary orbit above the equator, and a network of ground-based repeaters. It is based in washington, DC.

XM's business model is to provide pay-for-service radio, with commercial-free music channels, analogous to the business model for premium cable television channels. They also provide other data services such as weather information for pilots and weather spotters. In addition, they transmit coded traffic information directly to navigation systems using TMC technology. Their service includes music channels, news, sports, talk and entertainment channels, premium channels, regional traffic and weather channels. The XM signal uses 12.5 MHz of the S band: 2332.5 to 2345.0 MHz. XM's competitor in the U.S. is Sirius.

Sirius is a (DARS) service in the united States that provides streams of music, sports, news and entertainment. The streams are broadcast from three satellites in an elliptical geosynchronous orbit above north America. Sirius is based in New York City. Its business model is to provide pay-for-service radio, free of commercials, analogous to the business model for cable television.

Sirius' spacecraft Sirius 1 through Sirius 4 was manufactured by Space Systems/Loral. The first three of the series were orbited in 2000 by Proton-K Block-DM3 launch vehicles. Sirius 4 is a ground spare, in storage at SS/Loral's facility in Palo Alto, california. Sirius was previously known as CD radio. The dog in the Sirius logo is unofficially named "Mongo."

Mini-centronics: Hewlett Packer Users Beware

As computer manufacturers begin to phase out old standards (e.g. IEEE 1284, RS-232), there is an increasingly large base of computer users who want to use their old Hewlett-Packer parallel printer with newer usb-only laptop and desktop systems. They purchase a usb to Parallel adapter, only to find that the parallel end doesnt fit on their HP printer. What's the problem?

In 1992, citing compact size and a simple connection to the printer, Hewlett-Packer decided to go with the IEEE 1284C connector, also known as mini- or micro-centronics. However, this connection has proved to be largely unpopular with other manufacturers, resulting in an interface that is nearly unique to HP printers.

As the IEEE 1284 standard became outdated in favor of usb, adapters sprang up to fill the gap between the older parallel printers and newer usb-only computers. However, manufacturers of these adapters went with the most popular printer connector: CEN-36 or centronics, which is considerably larger in size, although comparable in capability to the mini-centronics connection. So where does this leave those with old but useable mini-centronics parallel HP printers?

The answer is found in the centronics to mini-centronics adapter. This adapter converts a larger-sized centronics connection to the smaller, more compact mini-centronics end, allowing people to connect their parallel HP printers to their newer computers. A word of caution: the usb to parallel adapter is still necessary to complete the connection because the conversion from parallel to usb must still be made.

The contronics to mini-centronics adapter is a niche product that can be difficult to find, but it represents the best solution for those wanting to hold on to that old HP printer.

Aesthetic Surgery - It's Aims and Possibilities

With age comes wisdom and experience. Regrettably, quite opposite things happen about youthful and attractive appearance as, with age, it is gone. Plastic surgery gives people a second opportunity in their life to look young and beautiful.

The plastic surgery specialist Gintaras Papeckys from Kaunas (second largest city in Lithuania) has devoted more than thirteen years to helping people and creating beauty. The surgeon worked on probation in Belgium at St. Lukes University Hospital and took part in conferences in Greece, America, France as well as Check Republic. Although the time of life is running at a cosmic speed, says Papeckys, we can still slow it with the help of technical tools.

Many patients think that a plastic surgery specialist will miraculously change their body shapes into something totally perfect, but this is not so. Aesthetic surgery does not pursue records. The idea of aesthetic surgery is not creating ideal beauty. The aim of present-day aesthetic surgery is to stop the aging process and help everyone look younger, more beautiful and attractive. When somebody says to my patient: Hey, you are not getting old! You look as beautiful as in your youth, for me it is the best evaluation of my work, says Papeckys.

women start aging earlier than men. The first small wrinkles appear at the age of about 25. Therefore, a woman must become worried about her beauty much earlier. For the beginning, specialists recommend prophylactic procedures such as using creams containing fruit acid (AHA). It smoothes wrinkles and tightens skin. Later, at the age of 35, creams are no longer effective to prevent aging. The wrinkles from nostrils to the corners of the mouth become deeper, and the mimic wrinkles get more visible. Due to the fatty tissue atrophy, the cheeks sink in. Therefore, the surgeon recommends a bit more aggressive procedures. They are not complicated and include micro-suction, fat transfer or Botox and Matridex injections into wrinkles.

Mens skin is tighter, therefore micro-suction or fat transfer operations are recommended when they are about forty. At this age, there appear changes in the lower eyelid and cheek areas. For the fair sex, the critical age is over 40. The wrinkles of aging become clearly noticeable: the skin loses elasticity, falls and gets wrinkled; there appear laugh wrinkles, double chin and pouches under the eyes. A plastic surgery specialist evaluates the traces of age with the help of computer and suggests ways of correcting those changes.

At the age of about 40, surgical intervention is also recommended because the excess of skin needs to be removed. To restore sunk-in cheeks, specialists use synthetic and biological implants or the patients tissues. A special operation is done to remove double chin. All these operations are done for men as well.

Also, it is a frequent case when after childbirth womens breasts lose their former shape. The most popular choice to restore and correct their former shape is the implants.

children may also have problems with their appearance. Inborn defects often lead to psychological traumas. A typical case is sticking-out ears, the treatment of which is recommended for children of 5-6 years old, before starting school. Burn scar correction is recommended before the period of adolescence, when appearance becomes very important among teenagers. Hare lip correction is recommended for new-born children before taking them home from the hospital.

So when 40-year old celebrities with not a smallest wrinkle on their face tell you stories of the saving grace of yoga, balanced food and similar things, dont take it for granted: very often it is the result of a plastic surgery specialists scrupulous work

History of Epcot

epcot is the second theme park built at the walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, florida. epcot is a unique park full of discovery, high tech fun and imagination combined with the wonder of diverse cultures in two distinct worlds, Future World and World Showcase. epcot, the second oldest of Disney's floridian theme parks was opened in 1982, and will probably need two days if you want to see and do everything within the park, (One day in Future world, and one day around the world Showcase, however many may find it less interesting than The Magic Kingdom or the disney mgm studios.

epcot is neatly divided into two areas: Future World and World Showcase. epcot Center evolved not out of the narrative tradition which Disneyland sought to evoke, but out of the documentary tradition of Disneys man in space and other programs. epcot, the walt Disney World celebration of human achievement and discovery, is a one-stop vacation spot for all of that. epcot is the site for one-of-a-kind world entertainment and special events, including the epcot International Flower & Garden Festival, one of the world's largest outdoor festivals of its kind;epcot International Food and Wine Festival; and epcot summer Series, featuring world-renowned live entertainment.

epcot has an abundance of possibility, sitting there waiting to be discovered. epcot Center offers a variety of major attractions, such as the exciting Test Track, which takes riders outside the pavilion to test the high speed capability of new cars, and the brand new mission Space, which exposes riders to G-forces similar to those in space. To commemorate the opening of epcot Center in 1982, the Imagineers who worked on the project put together a massive cake that was a scale model of the park. Everything in epcot will be dedicated to the happiness of the people who live, work, and play here, and those who come here from around the world to visit our living showcase.

How to Stick to a Diet

It can be very frustrating to stay motivated and to lose weight. Sometimes I feel that I am always starting out, but never ending up where I want. But Ive learned that to stay motivated for me requires setting and achieving small goals. The following tips always helped me lose the weight.

1.Drink more water- I used to drink water sporadically throughout the day, mostly at dinnertime. However, I found that I was dehydrated frequently. I tried carrying a water bottle around with me and it helped me to stay hydrated throughout the day. Plus, drinking first when I felt hungry prevented me from overeating frequently.

2.Divide meals into healthy portions- Dividing a meal into 1/3 veggies, 1/3 carbohydrates, and 1/3 meat will create a balanced meal. Make sure you at least have protein at every meal because it will keep you feeling fuller longer. Add vegetables and fruit into your diet. Rather than focusing on what you cant eat, focus on what you can eat. Dont eliminate all your favorite foods, but reserve them for the weekends. You will enjoy them more if you dont eat them every day. Plus you wont end up binging because you restricted yourself too much.

3.Weigh in daily with a digital scale- I weighed myself every morning and every night at the same time. A digital scale will show the difference in small tenths and hundredths of the weight so you can see small progress, plus you can track your body fat percentage. This also helps you to track your progress closer. Remember water weight and clothes can cause your weight to fluctuate slightly.

4.Dont eat carbohydrates a few hours before bed- Restricting carbohydrates before bed will allow you to sleep better and lose weight. If you go to bed slightly hungry (not starving), your body will burn more calories. Eat protein if you get hungry close to bedtime.

5.Add a weight loss supplement - This will help you eat less and speed up your metabolism. Not only will you see results a little faster, but it will keep you more motivated.

League One Betting Review - 5 February 2006

Southend United returned to the top of league One with a 2-0 win at Yeovil. Available at 13/8 before kick off, a first half goal from Mark Bentley and one from veteran Shaun Goater extended the Shrimpers unbeaten run to 12 games. steve Tilsons side are 7/2 to win the division outright.

Colchester set a new club record of nine consecutive wins as they came from behind to beat Bradford City. Colchester, 8/11 before kick off, fell behind after 37 minutes but hit back through Richard Garcia (2) and Chris Iwelumo. second placed Colchester are two points behind leaders Southend with two games in hand and are 11/4 favourites to win outright.

Friday night saw Swansea City edge back into third with their first win in five games against Bournemouth. The 4/5 Swans scored the winning goal through midfielder Andy Robinson on the stroke of half time.

Barnsley, at 10/11, kept up the pressure with a win against Bristol City. A goal in each half from Marc Richards secured the third successive 2-0 victory for the Tykes.

Brentford adapted quickly to life without striker DJ Campbell, a 500,000 signing for Birmingham City, by crushing Walsall 5-0 at Griffin Park. The 8/11 odds looked the safest bet of the day as goals for Isaiah Rankin, Ricky newman, Paul Brooker, Sam Sodje and a penalty for Kevin O'Connor eased the Bees to victory.

Huddersfield lost ground in the promotion hunt going down 2-1 at Tranmere on Friday night. David Graham cancelled out an early Carl Tremarco goal but the home side stunned the Terriers when former striker Delroy Facey netted the winner with six minutes to go for 7/5 Rovers.

Veteran striker Paul Hall's 100th league goal denied Gillingham an unlikely 7/2 victory and extended Chesterfield's unbeaten run to 15 matches. The Gills took the lead through Tommy black but hall ensured the Spireites a share of the points with a last minute strike.

Neither Rotherham nor Hartlepool did their relegation battle any good with a goalless draw. Both sides occupy a position in the bottom three and shrewd punters will have got on at 23/10.

While Rotherham and Hartlepool were cancelling each other out, Swindon edged out of relegation for the first time this season with a 2-1 victory over Doncaster. The Robins, 7/5 before kick off scored through Ricky Shakes and Charlie Comyn-Platt to earn Iffy Onouras side their third win in a row.

FIFA World Cup 2006 England Glory - 1966 / 2006

It surely has a nice ring to it and would be a dream come true for the plethora of England fans who have never yet witnessed the creator of the beautiful game bring home the goods.

Although England have a pretty favourable group, with Paraguay, Trinidad & Tobago, and the dreaded Sweden; they will come through the group stages to the finals and then, with a bit of luck, stomp all over the opposition with verve and tenacity; if wayne Rooney keeps his head that is.

As well as being a serious contender for the coveted Golden boot Award, if England do indeed progress, wayne Rooney is the key to Englands success in world cup 2006 and the rest of the team and world know it. The guy is a physiological freak in terms of the sheer power and depth of attack in his possession and will simply rip through the best defences that any of the worlds toughest may throw his way. He already proved this in Euro 2004, Portugal, where he was a constant worry for the opposition and, of course, does so every week at old Trafford.

wayne Rooney is simply one man, though, and cannot do the job alone; he will need pace man magician michael Owen at his very best, beckham curling em in sweetly from the right, Frank Lampard bulldozing through the middle and Mr Sven Goran Eriksson not doing his usual trick of messing with formations and pulling off players at the wrong moment. In fact, England hasnt had such a brilliant compilation of players in years; its whether they can gel at the right time and do what the England rugby lads did in 2003.

One thing is certain though and perhaps will never change; anyone and everyone faced with England, ups their game rate by a noticeable margin. It seems that everyone wants to beat the Auld Enemy; hardly surprising beings as the country with the once largest of empires has, at one time or another, trounced on or been instrumental in shaping the modern world as we know it. It seems logical that someone would want to get their own back by beating the national football team.

many of the England naysayers believe that the England team lacks the personality and passion to bring home the cup. Although a personality is great for the cameras, the one ingredient that is surely more important is playing the game of football and scoring goals, and with the current England line up we have the best chance since 1966. Roll on world cup 2006

Be Free with Wireless Speakers

Are you tired of laying wires through your house, creeping through small places just to get the right sound effect? Wireless speakers are the answer to your headaches. With wireless speakers you gain the freedom to move your music to where you want it to be without the hassles of cables. Planning to have a party outside? Don't move your whole entertainment system outside while you can make use of outdoor wireless speakers which can move right along with the party.

Want to have hi-fi quality sound through your laptop computer? Why should you be tied to wires while using a portable computer? Make use of wireless speakers to give you the freedom to work or play on your computer where you want to, while having the high fidelity sound you deserve. Here are a few examples of how you can use wireless speakers to improve your way of living.

Listen to your favorite music collection while taking a bath.

Have a BBQ or party outside without having to move your whole stereo system.

You can store all your favorite music on your computer and listen to it anywhere in your home.

Listen to music while working in the garden.

When your computer is doing certain time consuming tasks, have it play a sound when it is done with the task or when there is an error and have your wireless speaker notify you while you are lying next to the pool.

Get the perfect surround sound effect by having the freedom to move the speakers to exactly the right spots without getting tangled in wires.

Let your computer notify you of upcoming tasks or appointments by playing a sound through your outdoor wireless speakers, while you are washing your car.

Let your wireless speaker notify you discretely of intruders by connecting it to your alarm system.

Use you wireless speakers as a portable intercom system.

There are however a few things you need to watch out for when shopping for wireless speakers. Some are listed here:

Interference

Some wireless speakers may interfere with other wireless devices in your house like cordless phones. A good wireless speaker system will allow you to tune it to a different frequency to overcome these interferences.

Battery life

Battery life is not always too great on wireless speakers, as it consumes power to drive the speakers, internal amplifier and RF receiver. So, if you want to use your wireless speakers for extended periods of time, it may be wise to make use of the AC power adaptor. Now this may not always be practical - the whole idea of wireless speakers is to get rid of the wires. Rechargeable batteries might be the answer and some of the models even come with rechargeable batteries -something to consider when you need total freedom, even from power outlets.

range

Most wireless speakers can work fine within a range of 150 to 300 feet from the transmitter. (Which would be located at the source of sound i.e. your hi-fi or computer) The RF frequency is high enough for it to work through walls and furniture. You do not need a line of sight, but bear in mind that obstacles weakens the signal, and the more obstacles between the transmitter and receiver, the shorter the range will become.

Weatherproof

Outdoor wireless speakers are claimed to be weatherproof, but if you do not need to use your speakers outside all the time, rather store them inside. This will definitely extend the life of your valuable outdoor wireless speakers. If you really need to leave it outside all the time, try to find a spot where it can be hidden from the most harsh weather conditions.

Stereo

Not all wireless speaker systems include two speakers to give you a stereo experience. Especially the outdoor wireless speakers are sold as single units. This can easily be overcome by purchasing two speakers, obviously doubling the price.

Legislation

Wireless speakers use RF signals which may interfere with other RF devices. Make sure that the frequency range is legal in your country. If it is sold by a reputable dealer in your country, this should not be a problem. Wireless speakers are till a fairly new technology and some still have issues to be sorted out. So you have to do your shopping wisely.

Chronic Back Pain

I had been to three different physicians. The car accident in 1990 had left me with terrible back pain. The only option offered to me was prescription medication. For three years I lived with chronic pain - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The prescription drugs helped relieve some of the discomfort, but I had to stop taking them when I began getting sick to my stomach which was often worse than the pain itself. Time and again I thought, This cant be the only choice. There must be another alternative.

It wasnt until 3 years later that I heard about magnetic therapy from a friend, and decided to try it. With nothing to lose, I used a magnetic pad on my back during the day and slept on a magnetic mattress pad every night. Much to my surprise, after two weeks my back felt much better. After a few months, the pain was completely gone!

My wife, who had a back problem caused by herniated disks, woke up every morning with pain and stiffness. Not long after sleeping on the magnetic pad, the stiffness began to subside, and she was soon waking up pain-free as well.

Although skeptical at first, I was amazed at the effectiveness of magnetic therapy, and began to intensely investigate the field of biomagnetics. Since my initial experience, I have had the pleasure of helping many people achieve similar results, enhancing the quality of life of those suffering from chronic conditions and injuries.

Now Id like to take the opportunity to help those of you who may be suffering from chronic back pain, and to tell you how to better prevent it.

Back pain is the number one form of pain experienced by people in the U.S. It accounts for 20% of all injuries and illnesses in the workplace, and is responsible for as much as $50 billion in diagnosis and treatment each year [1]. The National Institutes of Health estimate that 4 out of 5 Americans will experience back pain at some point in their lives. Not a pretty picture from any standpoint.

The majority of back pain occurs in the lumbar region of the spine [2]. Here, most of your bodys weight is placed on the lowest 5 of the 24 vertebrae (bones) that make up the spine. Considering all the other muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints, disks, and major nerves that are also a part of or connected to the spine, its no surprise that there are so many ways to injure your back as you twist and bend them [3].

Pain is considered chronic if its recurring, lasts more than three months, and can seemingly be stimulated by any small movement (for whatever reason) [4]. In the 21st century, were finally realizing that drugs and surgery are not always the answer for treating chronic pain or other musculoskeletal conditions & injuries.

The future lies in an integrative approach to promoting the bodys own healing ability by using noninvasive, safer treatments. Acupuncture, massage therapy, chiropractic and osteopathic care, and certain physical therapy exercises are just a few options to help with back pain.

Following an individualistic approach to treatment is key. A particular therapy that may work for one person may not work as well for another. Often its necessary to try a combination of treatment methods to begin feeling significant improvements.

For true recovery of back injuries and disease, pain and inflammation need to be reduced, proper function and strength restored, and further injury prevented [4]. With this in mind, lets discuss how magnetic therapy can help.

One of the primary benefits of magnetic therapy is the reduction of inflammation. Localized inflammation following an injury is a natural protective reaction. It creates an imbalance in sodium and potassium ion (charged particle) concentrations at a cellular level. As a result, fluid accumulates in the cells, causing the injured tissue to become inflamed. (Think of it as retaining water after eating salty food.)

If theres no intervention, the body will eventually heal itself and the inflammation will subside. However, this process can be very slow and painful. Because of this, treatments that can safely speed the overall process are needed, particularly in the case of chronic conditions like arthritis.

Applying a bio-north magnetic field safely rebalances electrochemical ion concentrations. Excess fluids and toxins are flushed from the cells and removed through the lymphatic system. As a result, healing time is often reduced by as much as 50%.

Since major nerve bundles run through the spine, its obvious why back pain is so common. Pain is caused by an electrochemical signal sent to the brain. The normal electric potential of a neuron (nerve cell) is around 70mV when in a resting state. When injured, a neurons charge becomes positive due to a shift in chemical ion balances. This triggers a pain signal to be sent to the brain.

Applying a bio-north (negative polarity) magnetic field lowers a neurons electric potential, bringing it closer to its normal, negative state. As a result, the pain signal diminishes faster, and in most cases, will eventually stop.

Another important goal when recovering from back injuries is restoring mobility. Magnetic therapy helps relax muscle tissue, thereby increasing flexibility and reducing the incidence of muscle spasms.

about four years ago, researchers in Italy tested the effects of a magnetic seating system on several volunteers. Each person participated by either driving or remaining seated at a computer workstation for prolonged periods, both with and without the magnetic system.

The results showed a decreased myoelectric (neuron) activity both at shoulder and lumbar level by using the magnet based sitting system for prolonged seated work tasks...The system appears to be an effective tool in preventing muscle contractures secondary to prolonged, constrained positions [5].

Because it can be so difficult and painful to move, many people feel they need to rest for a few days after injuring their back. But did you know that bed rest should really be minimized or avoided? According to David Lehrman, M.D. (chief of orthopedic surgery at St. Francis Hospital and founder of the Lehrman Back Center in Miami, FL), for every week of bed rest, it takes two weeks to rehabilitate [3].

A 1995 study in Helsinki, Finland found that out of 186 subjects, those who went about their daily activities as tolerated had greater flexibility and less pain than those who underwent backmobilizing exercises. The *slowest* recovery was seen in subjects that were prescribed two days of bed rest [6].

While an interesting fact, its one that some of us may grumble about. Bear in mind we still have to sleep and give our bodies a chance to heal and recuperate. As I found out years ago, sleeping on the proper magnetic mattress pad will help speed the healing process and can significantly reduce chronic pain over time.

Back in 1990, a 12month clinical test on the effects of magnetic mattress pads was conducted in Tokyo, Japan. The study, led by Dr. Kazuo Shimodaira, involved 431 subjects. 375 of them received full-sized magnetic pads and the remaining subjects received sham mattress pads for control. (Each magnetic pad contained 124 permanent ferrite magnets with field strengths of 750950 Gauss.)

Here are the results of the yearlong test:

On average, 53.3% of the subjects realized the effect of the magnetic mattress pad within 3 days, and over 70% within 5 days. Whats more is that thorough testing for side effects was conducted and none were found [7].

(Note: The magnetic mattress pads used in this study did not produce very strong magnetic fields. As stronger magnetic fields are more effective, a higher energy pad would improve results even further.)

Supporting these findings, a 1997 Johns Hopkins pain center treatment study compared magnetic therapy for chronic pain with a placebo therapy. It concluded that people using the magnetic therapy showed a dramatic improvement, whereas the placebo group improved only minimally. Again, there were no side effects detected [8].

Since the vast majority of adults are not in ideal physical condition, the risk of back injury for them is greatly increased.

If youre out of shape and are planning an activity that requires lifting, bending or twisting, its a good idea to take steps that can help prevent injury in the first place. Magnetic therapy is an excellent way of accomplishing this.

There are three primary actions that take place when using magnetic therapy for prevention. The first two are its ability to increase circulation and to relax muscles. The effects are similar to warming up and stretching before a strenuous workout. Its really the third action that sets magnetic therapy apart from anything else though. Magnetic therapy can effectively control energy flow along the bodys acupuncture meridians (energy channels).

Placing a magnetic pad or support over an area channels the bodys energy directly to that location. Increased energy availability, combined with improved circulation, significantly extends the amount of time that one can exert themselves before muscle fatigue sets in. In turn, this reduces the likelihood of muscle strain.

The combination of improving blood flow, relieving muscle tension, and reducing pain makes magnetic therapy ideal for treating back conditions and preventing further injury. While effective on its own, magnetic therapy is also an excellent adjunct to other treatments. Whether chiropractic, acupuncture, therapeutic massage, or another method, it can help improve and prolong a treatments positive results.

The next time youre out and about, make use of a high-energy magnetic support or back pad. Its a simple and effective way to continue through the day with less pain and a greater range of motion. Trust me. Your back will thank you!

TIPS & GUIDELINES FOR A HEALTHIER BACK

The National Institutes of Health provides guidelines for maintaining a healthier back. Following these and a few other tips will greatly increase your chances of preventing further injury while strengthening your back muscles.

When Standing:

Keep your weight balanced on your feet. Your back supports weight most easily when curvature is reduced.

Dont slouch when standing or sitting. (Keep your hands lightly clasped behind your lower back. This improves posture for your neck, shoulders and upper back, and reduces muscle tension.)

Wear comfortable, low-heeled shoes.

When sitting:

Make sure your work surface is at a comfortable height for you.

Sit in a chair with good lumbar support and proper position/height for the task. (Use a pillow, rolled towel, or lumbar cushion if needed.)

Switch sitting positions often and periodically take a short walk or light stretch to relieve tension and restore blood circulation.

If you must sit for a long period of time, rest your feet on a low stool or a stack of books.

When lifting:

Dont try to lift objects too heavy for you!

Pull in your stomach muscles, keep your head down and in line with your straight back, and lift with your legs.

Keep the object close to your body.

Do not twist when lifting.

Do not carry an object in one hand if it causes you to lean to one side. (Use both hands, or carry an additional item to balance the load.)

Exercise:

Always warm-up and stretch before exercise or other strenuous activity.

Following a prolonged period of inactivity, begin a program of regular lowimpact exercises. (Ask a physician or orthopedist for recommended exercises appropriate for your age and requirements.)

Speed walking, swimming, or stationary bike riding for 30 minutes a day can increase muscle strength and flexibility.

Yoga or tai Chi can help stretch and strengthen muscles, and improve posture.

Everyday habits:

Maintain proper nutrition and diet to reduce and prevent excessive weight (especially around the waist area).

If you smoke, quit. Smoking reduces blood flow to the lower spine and causes spinal disks to degenerate.
